Bulgarian is an Indo-European language and a member of the Southern Slavic branch of languages. It has about 12 million speakers (mainly in Bulgaria but also in Ukraine, Macedonia, Serbia), it is related to Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Slovenian and mutually intelligible with Macedonian. Bulgarian is the first Slavic language to have appeared in writing. At the beginning it used the Glagolitic alphabet, which was soon replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet. Bulgarian grammar has certain particularities, one of them being the fact that it divides the parts of speech into two main classes – mutable and immutable – depending on whether they vary grammatically or not.
Along the centuries Bulgarian borrowed words from Latin, Greek, Russian, Turkish and, more recently, from French, German and English. The language spoken in Bulgaria nowadays is an improved version of standard Bulgarian which was declared official language after the country gained its independence in 1878.
