Spoken by 14.5 million people, Hungarian belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of languages and its history begins around the year 1000 BC. Hungarian is related to two Ob-Ugric languages: Mansi, a language spoken by approximately 4,000 people living in the Ural Moutains, and Khanty (Ostyak), a language spoken by about 15,000 people in the Ob valley of western Siberia. Along the years, Hungarians have borrowed many words from the peoples they came into contact with - that is why today one can find words of Turkic, Slavic and German origin in the Hungarian vocabulary. In 1844 Hungarian was declared the official language of Hungary and of the other territories under Hungarian rule; Hungarian had an official status in Transylvania and certain parts of Serbia and Slovakia until 1920 when, as a result of the signing of the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary lost many territories.

Although related to Finnish and Estonian, Hungarian is considered by many a unique language that shares very few similarities with the other European languages. Difficult when it comes to translation and learning, Hungarian is still a rather popular language. Hungarian translations require native, experienced linguists.
