Icelandic Translation Services

Icelandic is a North-Germanic language spoken by the 300,000 people living in Iceland.

This country, isolated by glaciers and fjords from the rest of Europe, has managed to keep its writing system almost unaltered for the past seven centuries. Icelandic is a slightly modernized version of Old Norse, the language spoken by the Vikings. Its alphabet contains letters that bear strong resemblances to the old Runes; these letters are not used in other languages, except for the phonemic transcriptions of certain Germanic languages.

A policy of ‘linguistic purism’ was implemented in Iceland in the 18th century. This policy implied that neologisms should be created from Old Norse words that were not used anymore, and not from foreign borrowings.

Icelandic is closely related to Faroese and certain Norwegian dialects. It forms, together with the previously mentioned languages, the West Scandinavian group of languages.
