Malay is the Austronesian language that is the mother tongue of the ethnic Malay people. The Malay people are believed to have originated in Borneo and then expanded outward towards Sumatra, before finally finding a heartland in the Malay peninsular. These first Malay’s, themselves are thought to originally have come from Taiwan via the Philippines. The Malay ethnic group is separate to the ‘Malay race’, which is a much larger grouping of people and includes the people of most of Indonesia and the Philippines.
Malay is the official language of Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and East Timor; but it has a much wider utility as it is also spoken in Southern Thailand and the Southern Philippines. There are about 30 million speakers in the region for whom Malay is a first language and about a further 400 million second language speakers.
Malay uses a Latin script called Rumi for its transcription although there is also an Arabic script called Jawi, which is used in some quarters. Rumi is the official script in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia; however, Rumi and Jawi have equal status in Brunei.
