Uzbek is a member of the Turkic group of languages and is primarily spoken in its home country of Uzbekistan. The Turkic group of languages is thought to have first come to the area now known as Uzbekistan in around 600-700 AD, when it gradually displaced the local speakers of Indo-Iranian languages. With the coming of Islam, Uzbek was heavily influenced by Arabic and Persian, an influence that the language strongly retains to date. Within Uzbek there are several active dialects; however, there is one commonly used dialect that has become the de facto medium of communication for use in Newspapers, Television and official State usage.
The Uzbek alphabet has seen a number of changes within the last century; originally and in common with most Central Asian languages, Uzbek used a form of Arabic alphabet. From the early 1920’s the Latin and then the Cyrillic scripts came to be used until 1992, which saw the re-introduction of the Latin script; this change has been slow to take hold, however and most Uzbeks still use the Cyrillic script.
